Clicker Training
What is Clicker Training?
A reward based, motivational method of training any animal (not just dogs!) to perform any behaviour on command. Clicker training is mentally stimulating for both pet and owner, once mastered it can be a lot of fun and there is no end to the tricks you can teach your pet!
What is a Clicker?
A small handheld device usually made from plastic with a little metal strip which makes a ‘click’ sound when pressed. Clickers come in a variety of shapes and sizes from the traditional ‘box style’ to animal shapes and round smiley faces! Anything which makes a ‘click’ sound can be used for clicker training even a pen!
How does it work?
Clicker training works by teaching the animal that when they hear the ‘click’ sound they will be rewarded, usually with a small food reward but anything the animal finds rewarding will work. By pairing the ‘click’ sound with certain behaviours it is possible to teach the animal to perform those behaviours ‘on command’, in anticipation of a reward. When used correctly the animal starts trying to work out how to make you ‘click’ and thus teaches itself certain behaviours! This method of training is fun, fast and rewarding for both animal and owners.
